It’s a celebration! Dr. Jodi Danna, D.D.S. and Dr. Tina Lalangas, D.D. S., along with the rest of our DannaSmile team,  will celebrate the grand opening of our new dental office by offering a Community Service Day. We will be providing free preventive and emergency dental care. Services will include cleanings, exams, fillings and minor extractions. The event will take place on Saturday, May 11, 2013,  from 7 am-4 pm. Heart Attack Risk-Surprising Indicators Include Gum Disease, E.D. and More

Yet gum and oral health are not the only signs. Erectile dysfunction, migraines and a few other conditions are also linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. 8 Foods for Fresh Breath

Bad breath is a concern for many of our patients. With regular dental appointments, it is our job to help you keep your oral hygiene in tip top shape. With optimal oral health, your breath should be fresher than most. However, did you know eating certain types of foods can give you fresher breath than others? For example, green tea is known to be high in antioxidants. And antioxidants help protect your cells and have health boosting qualities. Yet, it’s fascinating to know that those very same antioxidants prevent bad breath bacteria from adhering to the inside of your mouth. Obesity and Gum Disease–Science Shows a Link

A new study shows there is a direct link between obesity and gum disease. Researchers are not sure which comes first, however, when a person is obese, their body has an increased risk of  inflammation in tissues due to an elevation of cytokines.  A primary symptom of periodontitis, or gum disease is inflammation. Very interesting food for thought. One more  important reason to be as healthy as you can be! That includes shooting for an optimal healthy weight for your height. When you are at your best weight-wise, your risk of developing a variety of adverse health conditions will be decreased. Read more about these new findings by clicking here.

Dental phobias are common.

Fear of visiting the dentist is more common than you might think. I was intrigued by this article that discusses 7 common fears people may experience when faced with their annual dental check-up, dental emergencies or even just a simple cleaning. Can you guess what they are? I’ll give you a hint. Did you know the top two fears that you are born with are: fear of falling and fear of loud noises? You guessed it. Fear of loud noises is one of the seven discussed here. And last of all, this article also points out a study which proved that humor in the dental office may help lessen fear. Points for us! There are plenty of reasons to smile!

I recently read this article that features an interview with the author of the book “Why Smile–The Science Behind Facial Expressions.” It turns out there are some pretty interesting facts about smiling. For example, the author, Marianne LaFrance, a Professor of Psychology at Yale University, reveals that researchers discovered that bereaved spouses who showed smiles while talking about their loved one shortly after his or her death were better off at both six months and twelve months later than those who did not show some smiling immediately following their loss.
